When I made the vinyl and CD album ‘RonCycle1’ (The journey of a melody), I reckoned that music (organised noise) of any sort, from the hollowed-out log to the largest symphonic structure, and on to vast electronic vistas, is mainly organised frequencies (pitch) and organised time (rhythm). I don’t think one exists without the other, but it is possible to choose a focus. So, ‘RonCycle1’ which was supposed to focus on melody has a lot of rhythm in it – and ‘Staring Sane’ has a lot of melody in it. As it has turned out, I think that the melodic content wins in some sections, but I can definitely say that some of the rhythms are ferocious – and my virtual assembly of Workshop Percussion particulary bites, as does the equally manic real-life drumming of Liam Genockey.
The entire structuring of the separate sections was achieved by a most complex interposing of real-life musicians with my digital architecture. The sonorous cello of Caroline Dale gets us on the melodic path, a winding track through dense woodland, emerging into a field of light borne by the soaring soprano saxophone of Richard Scholfield. Liam Genockey emerges hot thoughout. The overall framework and body was constructed both on good old manuscript paper and by wild and audacious driving of the near infinite capabilities of the computer.
